After padding their wide receiver room on Friday with Jarrett Boykin, the Panthers have gone on to add help along their offensive line.

One day after he was released by the 49ers, tackle Jonathan Martin has been claimed off waivers by Carolina, the team announced.

The one-time second-round pick of the Dolphins became a household name two seasons ago after being subjected to mental and verbal abuse from teammates such as Richie Incognito, John Jerry and Mike Pouncey in Miami. He went on to start nine games for San Francisco in 2014, but looms as more of a depth signing for the Panthers.

With Michael Oher penciled in at left tackle and Mike Remmers on the right side, Martin will have a chance to compete for work come training camp.

We still expect the Panthers to unearth a lineman or two in the draft. Oher and Martin were bound to find jobs with so many teams looking for help, but neither looked like starting material last season. The rebuilding of Carolina’s front five remains a priority project heading into 2015.
