With a night to sleep on it, Tomsula is not prepared to make any drastic changes, such as benching quarterback Colin Kaepernick or altering the offensive coaching staff.
“Colin’s our quarterback,” Tomsula said Friday, via the Sacramento Bee. “No controversy.”
Kaepenrick continues to struggle not only with rudimentary passing elements such as accuracy, anticipation and touch, but also with protections, field vision and decision making. He simply hasn’t progressed.
To be fair, he received little help from his offensive line and wide receivers Thursday night.
The loss was so thoroughly embarrassing that CSN Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco is hearing whispers that “something big could happen” because “there are a lot of very upset people in the 49ers organization.”
That potential “big” change won’t come at quarterback, as the only alternative is Blaine Gabbert, one of the NFL’s least effective quarterbacks over the past half-decade.
Only four times this year has an offense managed 10 or fewer first downs in a game. Three of those performances are by the 49ers.
As overmatched as the offense has appeared at times, Tomsula insisted Friday that he will not consider any in-season changes to his coaching staff.
The 49ers waived goodbye this past offseason to their three top coaches and nearly a dozen key veterans. The result is a 2-5 team with a quarterback under fire and the worst point differential in the league.
