J.J. Watt is indeed out for the entire 2016 NFL season with a back injury.

The All-Pro defensive end underwent surgery on Thursday, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, via a source informed of the situation. Surgery was their best choice for recovery rather than rehab and rest, Rapoport added.

Watt was expected to miss the season with there only being a slim chance of the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year returning even if he didn’t undergo surgery, Rapoport reported.

The Texans announced Wednesday they placed him on injured reserve. Watt re-injured his back during Houston’s Week 3 loss to the New England Patriots.

This is Watt’s second surgery in three months. He missed the entire preseason after having surgery to repair a herniated disk in late July.
