Welcome to the Dynasty First Down, where each week, I’ll focus on one player losing dynasty value. This is just a portion of a new dynasty series entitled Three & Out, which can be found each Monday. Julio Jones, WR ATL
Hear me out on this one. Yes, Julio Jones is a superstar WR, one of the best in the league. Yes, he still deserves to be highly ranked and chosen in the first round of dynasty startup drafts. Yes, he will even still produce, often at very high levels. Among Jones weekly fantasy finishes this year are six top ten WR performances. When Jones is not “on” though, he really seems to be a complete bust, putting up very few “in between” games. In the weeks he’s not finished inside the top 20, Jones has been the WR94, WR61, WR67 and WR66 (pending MNF.)
At 27 years old, Jones is far from over the hill and should put up several more seasons of high-level production, as we’ve seen from players like Brandon Marshall and Larry Fitzgerald. With all of that said, I think the combination of his age, those occasional games in which Jones flops and the way the Falcons have spread the ball around to players like Mohamed Sanu and Taylor Gabriel this year, Jones dynasty value is slightly falling. I see him coming in as a mid-first rounder in dynasty startup drafts next off-season, as younger, high upside players like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper and Ezekiel Elliott leapfrog the Falcons superstar.
