The Saints and Peterson are believed to be closing in on a contract that is expected to pay the veteran running back $3.25 million in 2017, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, via a source informed of the situation.
The agreement is not yet finalized, Rapoport stressed, but discussions are moving in that direction. The deal would also feature incentives allowing Peterson to earn another million.
Regardless of the final numbers, the salient point is that the seven-time Pro Bowler would earn less than incumbent starter Mark Ingram, who is coming off the most productive season of his career. Ingram has improved significantly in the passing game over the past two years, which would theoretically position Peterson to concentrate on early-down runs and high-leverage situations such as third-and-short and goal-line carries.
